Sashimi of Firefly Squid “Hotaru-Ika”
My favorite sashimi during from spring to early summer season.
This is a Watasenia scintillans, also known as sparkling enope squid or firefly squid. 🐙🐙
“Watasenia scintillans” is derived from the name of a Japanese biologist Watase Shozaburo, who gave them the formal Japanese name “Hotaru-Ika”.
Boiled “Hotaru-ika” with soy-sauce and wasabi.
(Sashimi below picture are salmon, sea bream, tuna, bonito, and crab. Sashimi garnishes are shredded daikon radish, shiso Japanese perilla, benitade (Persicaria hydropiper), and Edible Chrysanthemum Flower.)
With karashi-sumiso-sauce (white miso, Japanese mustard, and rice vineger)
is a Watasenia scintillans, also known as sparkling enope squid or firefly squid. 螢烏賊 or 蛍烏賊（ほたるいか） literally “firefly squid”
