Squid changes in color depend on the muscular contraction and relax.

Surume-Ika, Squid (Todarodes pacificus)

These are chromatophores of “Surume-Ika” squid Todarodes pacificus. His body surface is covered by a lot of chromatophores (色素胞) and its color changes depend on the muscular contraction.

If fresh, the color will be red and dark brown because of muscle contracting post-rigor.  Loosing freshness, it will be whitish because of muscle relax.

The longest two arms of squid are tentacles (触腕) and there are chitinous dens in sucker.

is a tentacle.  触腕(しょくわん) literally “arm for touching”
