Dried Capelin with Roe

“Komochi Shishamo” is a popular menu in Izakaya restaurant, which is casual place for after-work drinking.

These are softly dried “Karafuto Shishamo” capelin (Mallotus villosus), which are different from “Shishamo” Shishamo smelt (Spirinchus lanceolatus).

Originally “Komochi Shishamo” is female Shishamo smelt with roe, but now most of them are female capelin with roe.

The shishamo smelt swims upstream the river to spawn, but the capelin dose not run up the river.

Generally distributed in the supermarket, the shishamo smelt is from Hokkaido and the capelin is from Russia.

is a dried female Shishamo eith roe.  子持ち柳葉魚(こもちししゃも)  literally “willow leaf fish wit roe”
