Boiled “Hotaru-Ika” Firefly Squid
“Hotaru-Ika” shining pale in the night sea.
This is a Watasenia scintillans, also known as sparkling enope squid or firefly squid.
“Watasenia scintillans” is derived from the name of a Japanese biologist Watase Shozaburo, who gave them the formal Japanese name “Hotaru-Ika”.
Hotaru-Ika has about a thousand luminous organs of 0.2mm in size in his body and legs, and they shine pale by the luciferin oxidized with the luciferase enzyme.
