Boiled “Hotaru-Ika” Firefly Squid

“Hotaru-Ika” shining pale in the night sea.

This is a Watasenia scintillans, also known as sparkling enope squid or firefly squid.

“Hotaru-Ika” is written “螢烏賊 or 蛍烏賊” in Kanji, literally “firefly squid”.
“Watasenia scintillans” is derived from the name of a Japanese biologist Watase Shozaburo, who gave them the formal Japanese name “Hotaru-Ika”.

It lives in the deep sea of depth 200-700m.  Representative production area of Japan is the Toyama Bay, Toyama pref.

Hotaru-Ika has about a thousand luminous organs of 0.2mm in size in his body and legs, and they shine pale by the luciferin oxidized with the luciferase enzyme.
