Simmered ”Manganji-Togarashi” Sweet Japanese Pepper with Shiitake mushroom

This green pepper is a quasi “Kyo-Yasai” traditional vegetables of Kyoto.

“Manganji-Togarashi” is written “万願寺唐辛子” in Kanji, literally “Manganji temple pepper”.

They were produced by crossing of “Fushimi-togarashi” green pepper onto California Wonder Pepper in the district of Manganji temple, Maizuru city of Kyoto,  in the end of the Taisho period.

Harvest season of summer has come!  Bathed in full sun, the outdoor-grown vegetables are green shiny.

They has an elongate shape, and the taste is similar to green pepper.

Stir-fry them in pan,  then simmer with Shiitake mushrooms in dashi broth.

is a Japanese green pepper which has been cultivated in Fushimi district from the Edo period.  It is one of “Kyo-Yasai” traditional vegetables of Kyoto.  伏見唐辛子(ふしみとうがらし) literally “Fushimi region pepper”
