“Sazae” is a turban shell (Turbo cornutus), written “栄螺” and also “拳螺” in Kanji,  literally “flourish helix” and “fist helix”.

Both the winding direction is clockwise, it is common in nature.

There are thorn type and non-thorn type in turban shells.

It was said generally in Japan, the turban that lives in rough wave area has large thorns, and the turban live in the calm sea area has no thorns, but it is not correct.

It has been found that there is a genetically thorn type and non-thorn type, which are not influenced by the environment.

Look at the end of the muscle.

 

If it is the dark green, it’s female.  If it is the whitish, it’s male.
